ELDER RESOURCES

The ministry of congregational elders has never been more important  In a denomination that emphasizes the priesthood of all believers, elders oversee the spiritual health of the congregation.  They work closely with ordained and commissioned clergy to assure that members are constantly developing into greater Christ-likeness.  They assure that the congregation is a fully functioning covenant partner with the whole Church in its mission to witness, serve, and make new disciples.

In this time of deep change in the religious culture of the Midwestern U.S., the Church needs more elders who are willing to reclaim their calling, to be faithful, wise, and courageous leaders, working together across congregational and regional lines to make maximum use of the capacities God has given.

Gary Straub, in his book Your Calling as an Elder, writes:

"The spiritual revitalization we seek for our Disciples congregations begins with the vitality of the elders as spiritual leaders, practicing their faith in community.  If there are signs of helath, ongoing growth, vitality and joy within the circle, there is a hopeful future for the congregation,  Without this spiritual vision guiding the core spiritual community of the congregation, we are simply shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic." ELDERS HELPING ELDERS: A NETWORK FOR GOOD
Join in this circle.  Share this page with elders in your congregation.
Congregational elders from across our Region will gather for a second time this year at First Christian Church, Bonner Springs, Saturday, September 16 from 9:30 am - 2:30 pm.
  • Check in and reconnect with elders
  • Engage in prayer and scripture study (Ephesians 4:11-16 and Acts 15)
  • Be part of a table-top wisdom community – How are we helping our congregations to be “good news” for people in our community who express no interest in Christian theology and practice?
    • What works?
    • What doesn’t?
    • What could we do together?
  • Know about resources available now and in the near future
