The ministry of congregational elders has never been more important In a denomination that emphasizes the priesthood of all believers, elders oversee the spiritual health of the congregation. They work closely with ordained and commissioned clergy to assure that members are constantly developing into greater Christ-likeness. They assure that the congregation is a fully functioning covenant partner with the whole Church in its mission to witness, serve, and make new disciples.
The role of the elder in congregations has changed since the early 1800's. A revival is underway of their roles assisting at worship, the Lord's Table and baptism and sharing in the pastoral care and spiritual leadership of the congregations that equip and elect them.
